One point worth making for anyone who spends long hours outdoors: caps and helmets do not cause pattern hair loss. Traction from something worn extremely tightly can damage hair over time, but the recession seen at the temples in most men is genetic and hormonal, not mechanical. The photographs show a cricketer captured over many years in sun, cloud and floodlight, in and out of a cap, with hair cut differently at different points. Commentators have read a great deal into that. Without a statement from Broad himself, the accurate answer remains the one at the top of this page.
