Two things are worth confirming with any clinic, ours included. First, how many nights are covered — packages that read as identical on price sometimes differ by a night or two. Second, whether the transfer is genuinely private or a shared shuttle, because after a long day in the chair that difference is felt.

The sequence is the same whichever tier you choose, and knowing it in advance removes most of the uncertainty.

It starts with photographs. You send images of the front, top, crown and donor area, along with anything relevant in your medical history. That gives a first read on whether a transplant is the right answer at all — and occasionally the honest answer is that it is not yet, because the loss is still active or the donor area will not support what you are hoping for.

If it does look workable, you get an indicative plan. The word indicative matters: a graft count taken from photographs is a starting figure, not a commitment. Scalp laxity, donor density and the direction of existing growth are only readable in person, and they are what decide the final number.

Then dates. Two of them are fixed — the operation and the first wash — and everything else is arranged around those. Book flights only after both are confirmed in writing, because moving a flight is inconvenient while moving an operation is expensive.

On arrival, the scalp is examined properly and the hairline is drawn with you looking in a mirror. This is your last practical moment to change something. If the plan has shifted noticeably from what you were quoted, say so then rather than afterwards.

Two clinics can quote figures within a hundred dollars of each other and be offering quite different things. The gap is rarely in the headline; it is in what sits under it.

Who performs which stage. Extraction and placement can be handled by trained technicians under supervision. Whether the number can move. A package priced flat should stay flat. If a clinic prices per graft, ask what happens if the assessment on arrival lands higher than the estimate from your photographs.

What happens at twelve months. That is when the result is actually assessable. Ask what the clinic's position is if density falls short of the plan, and get the answer before you pay rather than a year later.

Most clinics take a deposit to hold a date and the balance around the procedure. That is normal. What varies is how much of the arrangement is written down.

Before any money moves, ask for a single document that states the total, the inclusion list, the operation and wash dates, the named surgeon, and the position on revision. If a clinic is comfortable with all of that in writing, you have learned something useful. If the answer is that it will all be sorted on arrival, you have also learned something.
